Why VO2 Max Matters More As We Age And How We Train It at Hardware Junction
There has been a lot of conversation recently around the “Norwegian 4x4 Protocol” and improving VO2 max for longevity and heart health.
But what actually is VO2 max?
And why are more coaches, doctors, and longevity researchers paying attention to it?
What Is VO2 Max?
VO2 max is essentially your body’s ability to use oxygen during exercise.
In simple terms:
- How efficiently your heart pumps blood
- How well your lungs deliver oxygen
- How effectively your muscles use it
It is one of the strongest indicators we have for:
- cardiovascular health
- endurance
- recovery capacity
- healthy aging
- and overall longevity.
As we age, VO2 max naturally declines. This can affect:
- energy levels
- recovery
- stamina
- heart health
- and overall quality of life.
The good news?
Research shows we can improve it at any age.
What Is The Norwegian 4x4 Protocol?
The Norwegian 4x4 is a style of interval training designed to improve aerobic capacity and heart function.
It involves:
- 4 minutes of hard sustained effort
- followed by 3 minutes of easy recovery
- repeated 4 times.
The goal is not all-out sprinting.
It is controlled, sustained effort where the heart rate stays elevated for long enough to challenge the cardiovascular system.
Research into interval training in middle-aged adults has shown improvements in:
- VO2 max
- heart efficiency
- endurance
- and cardiovascular function.
Some studies even suggest that consistent aerobic training can help reduce age-related stiffening of the heart.
Why This Matters
At Hardware Junction we often talk about training for life not just training for today.
Strength matters. Muscle matters. Bone density matters.
But cardiovascular health matters too.
Being able to:
- walk hills without feeling exhausted
- recover faster
- keep up with your kids or grandkids
- improve energy
- support brain health
- and remain active as we age
…all relies heavily on aerobic fitness.
This is why we include different styles of conditioning across our classes.
How We Train This At Hardware Junction
CrossFit Classes
Our regular CrossFit classes combine strength, conditioning, skill work, mobility, and aerobic training into one complete approach to fitness.
Many people think CrossFit is only about intensity, but good programming develops:
- strength
- cardiovascular fitness
- endurance
- coordination
- resilience
- and recovery capacity.
Through varied workouts, pacing strategies, interval training, and sustained efforts, members naturally improve their aerobic fitness and work capacity over time.
Longevity Classes
Our Longevity sessions are designed specifically to support healthy aging, movement quality, aerobic fitness, strength, balance, and long-term function.
These classes are not about punishment or smashing yourself into the ground.
They are about building a body and cardiovascular system that supports you for decades to come.
HIIT Classes
Our HIIT sessions introduce members to controlled higher-intensity efforts that challenge the cardiovascular system while still being scalable and approachable.
This style of training can help:
- improve work capacity
- improve recovery
- support heart health
- and build confidence with intensity.
Hybrid & Zone 2 Sessions
Our Hybrid-style conditioning sessions combine strength and aerobic work in a way that develops sustainable fitness.
This includes:
- rowing
- bike work
- Ski Erg
- running
- carries
- functional strength
- and pacing strategies.
Many of these sessions naturally include the same principles used in VO2 max and interval-based training.
The Goal Is Not Perfection
You do not need to train like an elite athlete to improve your cardiovascular health.
Research consistently shows that small amounts of structured aerobic work performed consistently can make a meaningful difference over time.
The key is consistency.
Move regularly.
Challenge the heart occasionally.
Recover well.
Build strength.
Keep showing up.
That is what long-term fitness really looks like.
If you would like support improving your aerobic fitness, endurance, strength, or overall longevity, come and try one of our CrossFit, Longevity, HIIT, or Hybrid sessions at Hardware Junction.
